NDM News case study: Audience and Institution

1) Come up with an example of an institution that has benefited from the changes new and digital media has brought to the news industry. Explain how new technology has helped the institution and try to find statistics or financial figures that support your point.

I believe that the institution that has benefited the most with new and digital media is E-Media. This is because of the fact that more and more people are going on the internet. In fact 21% of people between the age of 16 - 24 get their news from the internet and that statistic is only going to go up with Print and Broadcast not changing the way they report news. Why watch a news program for 30 minutes when I can go to the internet and get the information I want in minutes.

2) Find an example of an institution that has suffered as a result of the changes new and digital media has brought to the news industry. In what way has it had a negative impact? Again, try and find actual statistics or financial figures to explain your point.

With Print they have suffered due to E-Media producing the same stories but for free and it being more accessible at home or on the road but they have still benefited from new and digital media because of the new stories that they are getting. They can now put more edgy material of the front page of a newspaper now because of the fact that there are more way of getting citizen footage for example when Muammar Gaddafi died in 2011 all of the images found was on camera phones but overall I still believe that the bad outweighs the good due to E-Media being a key part of the Newspapers decline in sales.

3) Who has benefited most from the changes new and digital media have had on the news industry - audiences or institutions?

I believe that it isn't clear that audiences have benefited more from new and digital media in comparison to institutions. I say this because of the fact that with new and digital media has become a key part in a lot of people daily routine. A lot of people in general have access to a smart phone with 72% of the general population in the UK have a smart phone which is very important for audiences because a lot of people will have apps or subscriptions to their favourite news channels on their smart phone and now people are getting up and checking their phones instead of getting up getting dressed and getting a newspaper. Also with smart phone people can pick and choice what information they want to read.

However Institutions have also benefited from new and digital media with print, broadcast and e-media have all benefited from the new tech age. With print it's benefited via now being able to get news from around the world in the blink of an eye with them being able to report the latest news as quickly as possible. With broadcast it's also very similar with the amount of news they are getting from around the world but it's also the case that they are able to have On Demand services as well so if you missed the 6 o'clock news you can watch it online in your own time. And with E-Media they have now been able to spark an interest in the news with a new demographic with the youth. The youth are now becoming more and more interest with what is happening in the news today. Due to Twitter and Facebook they can get all the information they need in a short period of time. 52% of people in the UK have a social media account now so more and more people will be able to get the information they need.

Overall I am not sure who has benefited the most both sides have strong cases to stay why their side is stronger. But in the end of the day institutions are trying to able to the audiences in the first place and allowing audiences the power to read what they want, it's allowed audiences to not be loyal to any institution instead now reading the information that most appeals to them so I believe that audiences have benefited the most.
